Install
Install Oktapod with the setup app for your computer, or from a terminal on a server.
Oktapod is free to download and use. No invitation, registration, or company account is required. It runs on a computer you control. Download it from oktapod.ai.
With the setup app
This is the easiest path. You do not need Node, Git, or a terminal.
| Computer | Setup package |
|---|---|
| Mac | DMG app for Apple Silicon. |
| Windows | EXE setup for Intel and ARM. |
| Linux | DEB or AppImage for x64 and ARM64. |
- Open the setup app.
- Choose where Oktapod should run. For most people this is this computer. Setup installs Oktapod as a background service and starts it.
- Connect your AI account. Sign in with ChatGPT, or paste an API key from OpenAI, Google, or another supported service. API use is billed by that service, separately from any chat subscription.
- Open chat and say hello. Try: "Help me plan my day. Ask what I need to get done."
If setup stops with a message, see Setup help. If Oktapod is already installed, the setup app keeps it and helps you finish any missing steps. If the connection is still starting after you save, wait a moment and choose Check again.
Next: First run explains what setup configured and what to connect next.
From a terminal
Use this on a server, a headless machine, or when you want to control the install yourself. The installer downloads the single executable for your computer, verifies its checksum, and installs the background service. No GitHub account or Node.js installation is needed.
macOS and Linux:
curl -fsSL https://oktapod.ai/install.sh | bash
Windows (PowerShell):
irm https://oktapod.ai/install.ps1 | iex
When it finishes, open a new terminal and run:
oktapod onboard
Onboarding connects your AI account and checks that Oktapod works. Then open
the web app with oktapod ui --open or send a message with oktapod chat "hello".
See First run for the setup choices.
Do not install Oktapod with npm install -g. The installer owns placement,
the service, and updates.
Installer options
| Shell / PowerShell option | Use it to |
|---|---|
--ref <tag> / -Ref <tag> | Install a specific published version. |
--service-mode none / -ServiceMode none | Install without a background service, for example in a container. |
--print-device (shell only) | Print the detected platform and exit. |
Pass shell options after bash -s --. For example:
curl -fsSL https://oktapod.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --service-mode none
In PowerShell:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://oktapod.ai/install.ps1))) -ServiceMode none
The public feed follows stable releases. Beta and source installations require
access to the GitHub repository. Run the downloaded shell installer with --help for its full options.
Supported computers
| Computer | Service |
|---|---|
| Apple Silicon Mac | LaunchAgent |
| Intel Mac | Not supported |
| Linux x64 | systemd --user, when available |
| Linux ARM64 | systemd --user, when available |
| Windows (Intel and ARM) | Scheduled Task, when available |
If a background service cannot be installed, Oktapod can run in the current session instead. It works while that session stays open:
oktapod onboard --service-mode session
Updates
On macOS and Linux, the installer schedules a check for new releases every six
hours. Installing an update stays your decision: ask in chat, "Is there an
Oktapod update?", or run oktapod update --check. See Updates.
Remove Oktapod
There is no single uninstall command yet. On a Mac, the Mac app's Remove local runtime action stops the service and moves Oktapod's files to the Trash, while keeping any remote connection settings. Back up first if you might want your data again; see Backups and operations.
